Technology has become an essential part of almost everyone in this world. Without the help of technological devices, things can become complex. These improvements in technology have made our lives simple and easy. The introduction of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and much more has changed our lives drastically. Apart from these technologies, one such fascinating segment is the internet of things. It serves as a vital part of the internet world. It merges both the physical and digital world, making it a smart world to stay. Explore the niche technology and understand the working and its benefits.

What is all about connecting devices?

The introduction of small computer chips and the prevalent wireless network serves as the root of the internet of things. Different objects are connected using this infrastructure by adding sensors. It serves as one giant virtual network of digital devices. These devices communicate with each other by sending real-time data. No human interference is necessary for transferring data.

Various examples that make up an IoT

Any device that communicates among them is an example of the internet of things. If you are switching on the light using your smartphone, then it comes under the IoT concept. The ideology of connecting devices using the internet can be as small as a toy to a large jet engine. Large objects can be equipped with many sensors to ensure if it works efficiently. It is possible to fill the environment with sensors to control every device in the surroundings.

Other examples of the internet of things include smartwatches and fitness bands. These operate without human involvement. Fitness bands monitor the heartbeat of the person for providing useful information. Not all devices come under this concept like the laptops and smartphones though the latter has a sensor embedded. It applies to any device that does not depend upon an internet connection and operates through sensors.

History of IoT

As the concept depends on sensors and wireless networking, these concepts were discussed between the 1980s and 1990s. Though it was introduced, the size of chips and equipment was so large to monitor and operate. At the initial stage, it was laborious to operate the objects and did not communicate efficiently. A need arose for processors that were cheap and effective that is easily disposable.

The RFID tags were introduced that are simply the low power chips that communicate wirelessly. After that, the ipv6 adoption among internet devices served as a dominant scale in the internet of things. The addition of RFID tags to various equipment for tracking the location served as the first application under IoT. The cost of installing sensors connecting through internet connection has seen a downfall.

It increased the installation of sensors in different devices to reduce human efforts in communicating with devices. Though it was an interesting factor in businesses and manufacturing industries, it serves various homes in many aspects. The initial attraction was towards having machines interconnected, and now it has been scaled up to many devices.

Working of IoT

The key elements for the internet of things are the devices. Basically, these devices communicate among them to share real-time data, each of which has an IP address. To make use of the data, it must be collected and undergoes processing, and next is the filtration and analysis.  The data collection takes place at a gathering point like the data center or the cloud storage service.

Transfer of data can happen either on a wired or wireless network. The processing step can occur at either the data center or on the cloud, but it takes too long in the case of critical devices. For such purposes, adding edge computing can be helpful. The edge devices can catch up on the data, process it, and send responses if necessary. For further processing and analysis, it can be sent to other devices.

Communication among devices – standards and protocols

Anything that needs to communicate revolves around language. It applies to the interconnected devices as they use communication standards and different protocols. For instance, ZigBee is one such wireless protocol tailored for short distance and low power communication. The message queuing telemetry transfer protocol serves for unreliable and delay-prone networks.

The LiteOS is based on the Unix operating system used for wireless networks. It supports both smartphones and smart homes along with wearables. The Data Distribution Service was introduced by Object Management Group to support high-end communications. The Long Range Wide Area Network was developed for supporting smart cities and wide-area connections with low power devices.

Security and privacy problems

Apart from its advantages to the smart world, it has some pitfalls to be dealt with. The sensors embedded in the devices collect both sensitive and non-sensitive data. Hackers can easily intrude on any one of the devices for manipulating the data. It makes the data unusable, causing problems. It is easy to send botnets and can cause distributes denial of service attacks. It can bring down many websites, making them more vulnerable.

These risks come under the security and privacy concerns of the internet of things. Sometimes the devices might ask for the user’s personal information, which may be vulnerable to hackers’ attacks. Business firms can take care to save their confidential and sensitive data using data encryption standards and other security measures. Every device must be updated regularly to conceal it from cybercriminal attacks.

Inseparable aspect among humans

We are likely dependent upon internet connections and interconnected devices. We cannot say no to Alexa because of vulnerability and privacy concerns.Using the technology appropriately by employing various security standards can reduce the intensity of problems in the future. A secured way of transferring data is by encryption, and embedding it for data transfer, processing, and analysis can be helpful.

Many business organizations and the public are dependent on technology. Many devices are interconnected and are serving more beneficial in various sectors such as industry and healthcare. Utilize the advancement of technology to the fullest and benefit from the services.
